I was four years old when I watched my mother roar my baby brother into her candlelit bedroom. I grew up carrying that image in my body, and with it, an unshakeable knowing that birth was one of the most normal, incredible things on earth.

Most women never get that transmission and instead get programmed. Movies, horror stories, well-meaning mothers who warn them of what's coming. A culture that has decided birth is a medical emergency to be managed, a body to be doubted and a pain to be feared.

Witnessing my mother didn't just give me a memory. It gave me the knowing on a cellular level that birth at home is the most ordinary — and extraordinary — thing our bodies are capable of as women. It gave me an imprint for life that most of us no longer have.

I became pregnant with my firstborn in 2021. Carrying my daughter brought me closer to God than I ever knew possible. For the first time in my life I was deeply, consistently in tune with my own intuition and the greater spiritual realm. That, alongside being in communication with my daughter's spirit, was powerful beyond measure. I had the answers to everything that mattered; I just had to listen.

When I finally gave birth, I handed my authority and inner knowing over to my midwife without fully realizing it. I constantly asked her permission throughout my birth process, and looked to her to answer things I already knew deep within. As the conditioned “good girl” who felt like she couldn't possibly know better as a first time mother than her midwife who had been at hundreds of births, I outsourced my authority and inner wisdom to the “expert” in the room over and over again.

It wasn't until I discovered the world of unassisted birth that I began to understand the dynamic I had been unconsciously playing a part of during my birth, and how things could have been different had I been conscious to this dynamic. I learned how deeply medicalized modern midwifery care usually is, the parallels it has with obstetrics, and the power dynamics that inevitably enter the birth space with it. I learned how the conditioning that tells us that midwives are the authority in the room is just that — conditioning. And how most of us, at the moment we are most powerful and most open (physically and spiritually), hand our authority away. That handing over — that outsourcing of our inner knowing to the so-called experts — is the grief point for most of us. The place where birth stops being truly centered around us mothers as the unique, powerful, spiritual and autonomous beings that we are.

I completed the Radical Birth Keeper School with Free Birth Society in 2023, and have been teaching about physiological birth and holding pregnancy circles since 2024. I am a mother of two, the youngest of which was born unassisted because of a deep inner and spiritual call to birth on my own. What I bring to this work is a deep connection to my intuition and great passion and understanding of physiological birth and its importance for protecting the motherbaby dyad. I believe that the most important work any woman can do in preparation for birth is to educate herself about physiological birth, and to come home to her own power and intuitive knowing so that she can claim her sovereignty in birth and in life.

Because when we do, everything changes. Not just birth, but the way we mother, the way we move through the world, and the way we pass our wisdom and energetic sovereignty on to our children and the future generations to come.
